UVI Emulation One review

Posted on July 24rd 2012

Today, we take the newly released at UVI, Emulation One, or the sequel prequel of the UVI Emulation II. Emulation One inspires itself by the Emulator, the “affordable alternative” sampler from E-MU Systems comparable to products such as Fairlight CMI and Linn LM-1 launched by the early eighties. The amount of popular musicians who used the Emulator sampler (Emulator, Emulator II, Emulator III, Emulator IV & EOS) is huge, ranging from David Bowie, Deep Purple, Depeche Mode, Genesis to Klaus Schulze, Vangelis, Giorgio Moroder, Queen, Tangerine Dream, XTC, Yes …. and much more. This series of 8-bit samplers was quickly apart from the “almost affordable” price, thanks to its compact dimensions and to the integration of computer technology on electronic keyboards which became a classic. According to UVI, Emulation One offers a collection of over 200 sounds that were each sampled with the highest quality equipment and processes. There are bass, old school drums, choirs, FX, keyboards, mallets, percussion to strings and Orchestral hits sounds. UVI Emulation One comes with an additional Drumulation One as a bonus, an 8-bit with step sequencer Beat Box.

UVI Emulation One comes with a 658 MB download able to be used with UVI Workstation in the following formats: VST (Mac / PC), RTAS (Mac / PC), Native MAS (Mac), AU (Logic and other AU-compatible sequencer) and Native DXi (PC), but Emulation One can also works in standalone mode. An iLok USB key with an Internet connection is required for the authorization, according to www.ilok.com. The installation is extremely simple – as all UVI products – After extracting the UFS file, you have to move it to disk / Library / Application Support / UVISoundBanks (Mac) or C: \ Program Files \ UVISoundBanks (Windows). Then, this instrument can be loaded on the free UVI Workstation or MOTU’s MachFive 3 (not free).

In my case, I use it in standalone mode with the UVI Workstation : once UVI Workstation is open, double-click the main browser, load Emulation One from the folder “sound banks” and chooses the preset folders you want among Bass, Bells, Brass, Strings, Synths or Winds & Woods. The Emulation One GUI presents himself in a clean interface, visually modeled after the original machine, with typical elements as the modulation effects section. There is the output envelope and velocity controls section in the upper section of the interface. A filter section offers three filter modes (high-pass, band-pass and low pass) control options including the intensity of the filter, the cut-off frequency and the Q-range and a typical ADSR envelope for the filter. The Pitch Envelope Depth and Time Division offers over control to simulate Portamanto effects.

At the bottom of the interface, there is a department where you can choose between a vibrato, a tremolo, or a filter to be assigned to the mod wheel and even the knobs to regulate the intensity of the effect. In addition, there is a “stereo” section with Alt, Uni, or Off mode and color, tune, spread controls, bringing you opportunities for creative use of the stereo field.

The effects section offers three effects: Phaser, Delay, and Reverb. For each one you can control the wet / dry mix. By clicking on the FX icon on the workstation’s menu bar, you’ll not only get access to additional parameters helping you to find the good tuning for the effects, but also the possibility of a substantial price list to select additional effects.

The menu bar provides you the ability to switch between the workstation, the fx department, and even to a mature Arpeggiator in which you can assign an unlimited number of parts.

Here are some audio examples:

Drumulation One:

Almost as a bonus to Emulation One, Drumulation One is included : an 8-part drum machine with integrated 16-step sequencer – to the point, effectively and without unnecessary frills. The user interface allows access to two parts (sequencer) at the same time – are each part, apart from 16 activated steps, mute button, controls for volume and panning, and the opportunity to sample tuning and two filters (high pass and low pass) are available. The integrated sample browser can conveniently, by Part, select from the existing arsenal of sounds.

The playback of patterns is activated either via the Run / Stop button on the keyboard or C3 / disabled and all eight patterns are synchronized to the tempo freely adjustable UVI Workstation or MachFive 3, or the tempo of your host DAW.

Conclusion: Once again, it managed to create a fantastic UVI instrument / soundbank, its sound quality and the variety of presets much appealed to me immediately. To Manipulaton the sounds are all relevant parameters are available, the structure of the UI is clear and logical, and immediately all the important functions and parameters from the main window without lengthy Herumgeklicke reachable. I personally find the integration and management of the UVI Workstation very well done (not to the possibility vergesssen UVI Sound Banks / instruments via MOTU MachFive to load 3). Those who are looking for a replication of the legendary EMU sampler, I can recommend one really emulation.
